Global Green http://www.globalgreen.org/ Hohoho, this site is the do-gooder site for the masses. You can get involved in combating climate change, create sustainable environments, eliminate weapons of mass destruction and promote access to clean water. Wow, they do have very big aims. And I think that it is a good cause. The main problem is that there are always so many areas in need of help and there are also political and social hindrance to such efforts, especially when we are talking about weapons. I don't know about you, but I think they should stick with the green stuff and leave those weapons to the experts. Most leaders aren't going to let go of their weapons just because you shout a few slogans. They are also involved in rebuilding New Orleans and making it as "green" as possible. Furthermore, they have numerous publications under their belt, some of which are worth reading for the general public.

The Mountain Institute http://www.mountain.org/ They are all about mountains - conserving and preserving them for future generations that is. The Mountain Institute was started in 1972. This organization helps highlight and educate the public on the importance of mountains through awareness programs in schools and educational institutes. They are also involved on projects in Nepal, Peru, Tibet and Appalachia to help communities living there to develop long term solutions to their problems due to rapid globalization and destruction to the environment. Although their work are mostly done directly with the communities involved, they have also worked with other organizations to better the lives and the situation of those affected.

The Vertical Farm Project http://www.verticalfarm.com/ What makes a city a city? Well, first of all you will need a substantial population. And you will also need to see tall buildings all over the place. Just look at the major cities around the world - they are always crowded and everyone lives and work in high rise buildings. Why not take that idea and use it in farming? Yes, people need to eat right? We can't pretend that all the flat land areas will be enough or even practical for farming. Not to mention, the farmable areas might just be too far away. Traditional farming methods might not work or will not produce enough food in the near future. Try vertical farming - whereby you grow food in high rise buildings. Farming vertically makes sense, just as it makes sense for people to live in. Of course this idea is only at its infancy stage and more studies and experiments needed to truly realize its potential. Visit their site for more information.

Trees Are Good http://www.treesaregood.com/ Just when people start calling me a tree hugger, someone else comes into play. It seems that they hug trees more than me, kind of scary if you ask me. Anyway, since we all know that trees are good, except those from the world of Middle Earth where they hurl rocks at you and talk god damn awfully slow. Anyway, this site contains a ton of information. Yes, information on trees which I think most people don't even care at all. So if you are into planting trees, you might want to take a look. It also tries to convince you that trees are good, hence their name. They are actually a group of expert arborists and provide certain services. If you have no idea what arborists are, let me enlighten you. They are actually some sort of repairman for trees. If your trees are dying or something is affecting them, you might want to consult their services.

World Land Trust http://www.worldlandtrust.org/ This group of people love the rainforest. I mean, what is there not to love. These rainforest acts like the earth's lungs and without them, we would probably be in deep trouble. And at the rate where they are been destroyed, it will be a matter of time before that happens. Yet it does not seem to interest the world at all. World Land Trust hopes to change all that by privately purchasing tracks of land in order to protect these forests. And not only rainforests, they hope to protect other wildlife habitats the same way. As for whether they have been successful or not, only time will tell. Currently, they have several projects in Ecuador, Brazil, Paraguay, India, Kenya and Borneo. Of course you can support their efforts by donating generously. You can even donate directly to specific projects.

Companion Planting http://www.companionplanting.net/ Everyone dreams of having a garden where they can grow their own vegetables and fruits right? No? Well, I do. I mean isn't it cool to eat lunch or dinner made from ingredients fresh from your garden? The taste would be miles apart from the ones you buy from the supermarket. Most of us have never eaten food made from real fresh ingredients before. I tell you once you have eaten those prepared from fresh ingredients, you will never go back to those supermarket ones. So for those dreaming to own a garden of their own should take a look at this site. It is about companion planting, which basically means growing "compatible" plants in close proximity to each other. Certain plants can benefit each other if growth nearby. for example some sun-loving plants might be grown next to other shade tolerant species to help provide protection. You get the idea. It greatly benefits your garden.

Grow Your Own Vegetable Garden http://www.grow-your-own-vegetable-garden.com/ Yes, grow your own vegetable garden. I know that we love ornamental gardens right? With flowers and whatever beautifies the place and you can often impress your visitors to your home. But come on, other than that, ornamental gardens are useless. Why not try a vegetable garden. Might not be as beautiful as the ornamental garden but it serves a dual purpose - beauty and provides fresh home grown vegetables and fruits. You don't need to spend (that much) money on buying vegetables and fruits anymore. Just go to your backyard and start picking if you need some vegetables or fruits. And not to mention, home grown vegetables are healthier as well. Isn't that cool? So if you want to try your hand at growing vegetables, why not take a look at this site. It contains very useful information on growing various types of vegetables, fruits and berries. Good luck.

Plant A Billion Trees http://www.plantabillion.org/ Do you think that they can do it? They need to plant a billion trees by 2015. And this requires a billion dollars since each tree cost about a dollar. Yes, there are saplings, so it does cost about a dollar. And with a billion trees planted, it will help the environment by removing all the toxins and whatever in the atmosphere and we can start breathing fresh clean air again. They are planting those saplings in Brazil. In my opinion, it does not matter where they plant it, as long as they do and they grow up into big strong trees, capable of helping us. Anyway, if you can spare a buck or two, you might want to donate to their cause, which I think it a good one. of course it might take a while for the effects to be felt but come on, if we don't start now, then when? At the moment, they have planted about 9 million trees, so still a long way to go. And if they succeed, we all benefit - rich, poor, hungry, rich, those in expensive yachts and so on. Everyone benefits from clean air.
