NetFilter is a set of software which helps to setup firewalling, NAT and packet filtering for Linux. This "framework" allows kernel modules to register callback functions with the network stack. It is the successor of the old ipchains software. Anyone can use this framework to create their stateless/stateful firewall, setup QoS and Internet routing policies, rules or just sharing Internet access. NetFilter is maintained by a core team as well as by a community of contributors and developers. This framework is open source and available free.
